Cotahuasi Canyon, located 10 hrs driving from Arequipa, is well known for its great panoramic views. Hiking Cotahuasi Canyon is a mix of fantastic, breath-taking sceneries during a 5 days visit. We pass through the highest and longest hanging bridge of Arequipa, visit geological rock formations, Inca and pre-Inca ruins, a local textile factory, hot springs and more. Besides we are going to have some stops to see the pethrogliphs of Toro Muerto and the dinosaur footprints. For lunch we have the option to eat shrimps and rest on hammocks in Majes River Lodge.
Time to visit.
It is
possible to visit Cotahuasi Canyon during the whole year, but the best time to visit is between April until November, then the rain season comes and there are frequent rainy days. Despite this you can see the sun shining every day.
Itinerary.
Day 1:
Departure from Arequipa to Cotahuasi.
Arrival at Cotahuasi. Dinner and overnight.
Day 2:
After breakfast our trek of 2 hours starts, we pass through the highest and longest hanging bridge of Arequipa, "Chaime Bridge", having a complete view of the canyon as well as the flora and fauna surrounding the area . Then we continue with the transport to Pampamarca town.
After a box Lunch we trek uphill and downhill for 5 hours. This trek gives the opportunity to see another perspective of the canyon. We visit the geological rock formations of "Huito" on the top of the mountain in front the town, nearby we see Wari ruins. Later on we are having a panoramic view of the Uscune water falls. On the return to the town we visit a local factory of textiles. By the way, Pampamarca is well know for rugmaking.
We return to Cotahuasi, where we have dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3:
After breakfast we go directly to Puica Town, here we start the trek uphill and downhill for 4 hours, visiting the impressive ruins of Maucallacta and enjoy the local people of this town.
After a box lunch we continue to Alca where we have time to explore the view. Peruvian men say that the most beautiful girls of Arequipa are coming from this town! We can enjoy the hot springs of "Huicho", with water of 38 ºC.
Later we arrive in Cotahuasi, where we have dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4:
After breakfast we leave on a trek of almost half a day to visit the Sipia waterfall, with 150 metres falldown.
After lunch we have the afternoon free.

Day 5:
After breakfast we start the trip back to Arequipa, having some stops on the way. We see the pethrogliphs of Toro Muerto and the dinosaurs footprint. For lunch we have the option to eat shrimps and rest on hammocks in Majes River Lodge. At the end of the afternoon we arrive in Arequipa .
